DHAKA, Mar 8, 2026 (BSS) - Women and Children Affairs Minister Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain today said the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) always works for women's empowerment, recognition and economic self-reliance.
"Initiatives such as the establishment of the Women Affairs Directorate in 1976 and the subsequent formation of a ministry were taken during the tenure of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. Later, Begum Khaleda Zia introduced several initiatives to expand opportunities for girls' education, including providing free textbooks and waiving tuition fees for female students up to class XII," he said.
He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a programme marking International Women's Day 2026 held at the National Photo Gallery auditorium in the capital this noon.
Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha (JASAS) organized the event with its national executive committee joint convener Ithun Babu in the chair.
Extending his greetings on the occasion, Dr. Zahid paid tribute to mothers, sisters across the country.
He said the observance of International Women's Day reflects the long struggle, pain and sacrifices of women around the world.
Dr. Zahid said the Begum Rokeya Padak was also introduced during the BNP's tenure to recognize contributions to women's empowerment.
Mentioning the party's future plans, he said BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has proposed introducing a "family card" system aimed at creating an integrated database for families.
Under the plan, the card would be issued in the name of the eldest female member or female head of household, though it would include records of all family members with their National ID and other relevant information.
He said the initiative is aimed at gradually establishing an integrated "one citizen, one card" system similar to that of developed countries.
Highlighting various social welfare supports, Dr. Zahid said the government provides allowances for persons with disabilities, widows and pregnant women.
State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Ishraque Hossain and BNP Local Government Affairs Assistant Secretary Shammi Akter addressed the event as the special guests.
Before the discussion, women were recognized for their contribution to protecting democracy, and financial aid was provided to distressed women.
