DHAKA, March 8, 2026 (BSS) – Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said the government has appointed an additional inspector general of police (IGP) from the Industrial Police as a focal point to ensure the payment of salaries, bonuses and other benefits to ready-made garment (RMG) workers ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.

“We have appointed a focal point to address the issue,” he said.

Speaking to journalists after two separate meetings on ensuring a safe and hassle-free Eid journey and the peaceful celebration of the Independence and National Day, the minister said the step was taken to prevent labour unrest in the country’s top export-earning sector.

According to Salahuddin, leaders of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) met the government ahead of the Eid and assured that most garment workers would receive their salaries, bonuses and other benefits before the festival, with only a few exceptions.

The home minister expressed optimism that factory owners would be able to clear the payments in time, adding that the government and the banking sector would extend all necessary cooperation.

Salahuddin, also a standing committee member of the rulling BNP, urged RMG factory owners and workers to resolve any payment-related issues before the Eid to ensure stability in the sector.
