DHAKA, March 5, 2026 (BSS) – Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon today stressed the need for making the Education Engineering Department (EED) more dynamic and stronger to accelerate the development of the country’s education infrastructure.

The minister came up with the importance while addressing a views-exchange meeting with officials of the department as the chief guest at the EED office here this afternoon.

Dr Milon said the EED has been playing a vital role in developing physical infrastructure in the country’s education sector.

He said the government is actively considering reforming the department’s organizational structure and increasing manpower to make it more modern and efficient.

Dr Milon said a large-scale drive is currently underway to develop education infrastructure across the country, and engineers must play a more proactive role in carrying out this huge responsibility.

He noted that there is scope to expand the activities of the Education Engineering Department up to the upazila level, similar to the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).

The minister said coordination and efficiency in work will increase significantly as the relevant institutions are now operating under the same administrative umbrella.
 
Issuing a strong warning about the quality of construction work, Dr Milon said many newly constructed buildings become conked out within just a few years, which is unacceptable.

“Contractors must be selected after strictly assessing their skills, manpower and ability to complete projects within the stipulated timeframe,” he said.

To ensure quality work, the minister also directed the formulation of an effective monitoring system and necessary policy guidelines.

Advising engineers to utilise modern technology, he said the new generation of engineers must adopt innovative thinking and modern designs.

“The objective should be to build infrastructure that is durable, aesthetic and cost-effective at the same time,” he added.

The minister said such interactive discussions with officials will continue in the future so that field-level problems can be heard directly and addressed promptly.

Chief Engineer of the Education Engineering Department Md Tarek Anwar Zahedi, along with senior officials of the Education Ministry and the department, was present at the meeting.
