Italy says EU, G7 ministers to meet over Iran

ROME, March 1, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Italy said foreign ministers of the EU and G7 countries will hold talks on Saturday and Sunday following a massive attack by Israel and the United States against Iran.

"Contacts with our partners will take place this evening and tomorrow at the meetings scheduled at foreign minister level within both the G7 and the European Union," Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's office said in a statement.

The Group of Seven world powers includes Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the US.

"As in the past, the government will continue to work with its European, regional and international partners to find a solution that promotes stability in the region.

"At the same time, it has reiterated its solidarity with the Iranian civilian population, which has courageously demanded respect for its civil and political rights in recent weeks," the Italian statement said.

Meloni spoke to her British and German counterparts earlier on Saturday, as well as several Gulf leaders.

The US and Israeli strikes prompted Tehran to fire off a missile barrage that sent people running for cover in cities across the Middle East.

"Meloni expressed the Italian government's solidarity with Gulf leaders and condemned the unjustifiable attacks suffered by their nations," the Italian government said.
