DHAKA, Feb 22, 2026 (BSS) - The Bangladesh High Commission in Pretoria observed the Great Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day 2026 with due respect, commemorating the supreme sacrifices of the Language Martyrs of 1952.
According to a press release received here, the day's programme began in the morning at the High Commission premises with paying deep homage to the memories of the Language Martyrs.
Bangladesh High Commissioner to South Africa Shah Ahmed Shafi placed a wreath at the Shaheed Minar located on the chancery grounds, formally inaugurating the observance.
Diplomats from different countries stationed in Pretoria, members of the Bangladesh community and officers and staff of the High Commission subsequently laid floral tributes at the Shaheed Minar.
A one-minute silence was observed in memory of the martyrs, followed by special prayers seeking eternal peace for their departed souls.
In the second phase of the programme, messages issued by the President, the Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister and the State Minister for Foreign Affairs on the occasion were read out.
A discussion session highlighting the significance of Ekushey was also held, where distinguished members of the Bangladesh community spoke on the historic 1952 Language Movement and the global importance of International Mother Language Day.
The High Commissioner underscored the importance of upholding the spirit of the Language Movement and nurturing Bangla language and culture among expatriates.
He wished continued success of the newly formed government and called upon expatriate Bangladeshis to work collectively for nation-building.
Marking the day, a drawing competition was organised for expatriate children, followed by prize distribution among the winners at the end of the programme.
