SYLHET, Feb 20, (BSS) – Minister for Commerce, Industry and Textiles Khandaker Abdul Muktadir today said one of the main responsibilities of the Ministry of Commerce is to keep the prices of essential commodities stable.
“Especially during the holy month of Ramadan, the importance of this responsibility goes up. When we took the charge, there was no opportunity to do anything special for Ramadan. However, the positive side is that the amount of food stock we have is sufficient to keep the market prices stable,” he said.
The commerce minister made the remarks while exchanging greetings with officials of different government entities and BNP leaders and activists at Sylhet Osmani International Airport.
Responding to a question regarding his plan for Sylhet, he said he has mentioned the development plan for Sylhet during his election campaign and in manifesto.
“I want to work to implement these issues that are directly related to improving the living standards of the people of Sylhet. Initiatives will be taken to create jobs, expand IT-related professions and establish an AI centre,” Muktadir said.
He said they need to gain global competitiveness, while the government will work sincerely to advance Bangladesh to a global position by utilising every day in the next five years.
Replying to another query about job creation in IT park in Sylhet, he said investment is needed to create jobs.
“To attract investment, a supportive environment including development of communication system, reduction of red tape and political stability must be ensured,” the minister said.
He said special policy support is needed for expatriate and local investors in Sylhet. “We are working on these issues. Its implementation will be visible very soon,” he added.
Sylhet lawmaker MA Malik, Divisional Commissioner Khan Md Reza-un-Nabi, Sylhet Range DIG Md Mushfequr Rahman, Deputy Commissioner Md Sarwar Alam, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abdul Quddus Chowdhury and acting President of Sylhet City BNP, among others, were present.
