DHAKA, Feb 17, 2026 (BSS) - Several high-level delegations from different
countries today paid courtesy calls on Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami
and leader of the opposition in the Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shafiqur Rahman at the
Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
The meetings were held in a cordial and warm atmosphere. During the courtesy
calls, members of the visiting delegations congratulated Dr Shafiqur Rahman
on behalf of their respective governments on his election as the Leader of
the Opposition, said a press release.
They expressed hope that under his leadership, his party would play a
historic role in Bangladesh's democratic transition.
Among the distinguished foreign representatives who met the Opposition Leader
were Prime Minister of Bhutan Tshering Tobgay, UK Minister for the Indo-
Pacific Seema Malhotra, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Deputy Foreign
Minister of Türkiye Ahmet Burak Akçapar, Pakistan's Planning Minister Ahsan
Iqbal, and Nepal's Foreign Minister Lt Gen Bala Nanda Sharma.
The visiting delegations, currently in Bangladesh, held separate meetings
with Dr. Shafiqur Rahman and exchanged views on issues of mutual interest,
including bilateral cooperation and regional developments.
During the meetings, the Opposition Leader highlighted the importance of
strengthening democratic institutions, ensuring good governance and promoting
regional cooperation for shared prosperity. He also reaffirmed his commitment
to constructive engagement in parliament and to maintaining friendly
relations with all countries based on mutual respect and common interests.
Those present on behalf of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami included Nayeb-e-Ameer
and Member of Parliament ATM Azharul Islam, Assistant Secretary General and
Opposition Whip Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan, Executive Council Member and MP
Saiful Alam Khan Milon, and Foreign Affairs Adviser to the Ameer Professor
Dr. Mahmudul Hasan.
