Death anniversary of Madar Bakhsh observed at RU

RAJSHAHI, Jan 20, 2026 (BSS) - The 59th death anniversary of eminent public leader Madar Bakhsh was observed today at Rajshahi University (RU).

A distinguished lawyer, the first chairman of Rajshahi Municipality, a local MLA, and one of the key initiators of the establishment of Rajshahi University, Madar Bakhsh is remembered for his dedicated service to public welfare and education.

Marking the occasion, a discussion meeting was held at 3:30 pm at the RU Senate Building. 

Vice-Chancellor Professor Saleh Hasan Naqib attended as the chief guest, while Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Farid Uddin Khan and Kazi Ha-Mim Saleh, grandson of the late Madar Bakhsh, spoke as special guests. 

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Mohammad Main Uddin presided over the event, and the welcome address was delivered by Professor Shah Hossain Ahmad Mehdi, Provost of Madar Bakhsh Hall.

In his speech, the Vice-Chancellor described Madar Bakhsh as a rare and visionary personality who worked tirelessly for public welfare. He mobilized public opinion and led a movement with local leaders to establish Rajshahi University, later serving as joint secretary of its Implementation Committee.

As the first chairman of the newly formed Rajshahi Municipality, Madar Bakhsh undertook extensive initiatives to ensure civic amenities for city residents. 

The Vice-Chancellor said Rajshahi University and the people of Rajshahi are particularly grateful to this benevolent, education-loving leader.

He noted that numerous educational institutions in Rajshahi and in Madar Bakhsh's birthplace, Natore, have been named in his honor. Several plans are underway at Rajshahi University to preserve his memory for future generations.
