DHAKA, Jan 19, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said their party is firmly committed to establishing a liberal democratic Bangladesh.
“Every year we remember Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and take an oath to move forward following the path he showed. This time as well, BNP is further strengthened in its commitment to establish a liberal democratic Bangladesh,” he added.
The BNP Secretary General made the remark while speaking to journalists after paying floral tributes at the mausoleum of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman on the occasion of his 90th birth anniversary at 11:00 am.
He said, “Ziaur Rahman is a name in Bangladesh politics that must be remembered at every moment. He proclaimed the independence of Bangladesh and subsequently fully introduced democracy and the multi-party system in the country. By ensuring the freedom of the press and the independence of the judiciary, he led the nation on the path of prosperity.”
Mentioning that the election has been scheduled for February 12, Mirza Fakhrul said that “Following the mass uprising of students and the people that forced fascist Hasina to flee, we have taken an oath to rebuild Bangladesh’s shattered economy and institutionalize democracy.”
He added, “Through this oath, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its affiliate and allied organizations will work to implement the ideals of Shaheed Zia.”
Regarding the upcoming elections, the BNP Secretary General said the Election Commission will be able to conduct the election competently.
“It is not new that there were some problems during the formation of the Election Commission. So far, the Commission has generally been seen working with competence.”
He continued, “The issues that came to BNP’s notice have been raised before the Commission. We believe the Election Commission will be able to conduct the forthcoming election properly.”
BNP Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Salahuddin Ahmed, and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, and Joint Secretary General Khairul Kabir Khokon, among others, were present.
