DHAKA, Dec 30, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia’s Personal Physician and Standing Committee Member Dr AZM Zahid Hossain said the nation has lost its true guardian following the demise of Begum Khaleda Zia.
“In her personal life, Begum Khaleda Zia was deeply compassionate. She always checked on the well-being of her colleagues and physicians, treating everyone with motherly care,” he said while speaking to the media in front of the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan.
Dr Zahid also described her as an exceptionally humane and affectionate individual.
Confirming the news of her passing, he stated, “Begum Khaleda Zia breathed her last at 6am while undergoing treatment. Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un.”
Dr. Zahid highlighted her multifaceted role in the nation, saying, “Begum Khaleda Zia was not just the Chairperson of the BNP; she was a mother, the head of a family, and as a Former Prime Minister, she served as the guardian of the nation. She remained uncompromising when it came to the interests and welfare of the people.”
Regarding her medical care, Dr. Zahid noted that the highest level of treatment was ensured according to the recommendations of her medical board. The board comprised renowned national and international experts.
“Physicians from Mount Sinai and Johns Hopkins Hospitals in the USA, as well as the London Bridge Hospital, The London Clinic, and Cambridge University Hospitals in the UK, were part of the medical board. Dr Zubaida Rahman, wife of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, was also a member of the medical team,” he added.
Dr Zahid further mentioned that while fulfilling his political responsibilities, Tarique Rahman remained in constant contact regarding his mother’s health to ensure there were no lapses in her treatment.
“We pray to Allah Almighty to grant Begum Khaleda Zia Jannatul Firdaus and to give the BNP leaders, activists, and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman the strength to endure this profound loss,” he concluded.
