Adviser Sharmeen mourns Khaleda Zia's demise

DHAKA, Dec 30, 2025 (BSS) - Adviser to the Ministries of Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Sharmeen S Murshid has expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
 
In a condolence message today, the adviser said the nation has lost an important political guardian with the death of Begum Khaleda Zia, saying she is deeply saddened and shocked by her demise.

Sharmeen S Murshid said Begum Khaleda Zia was not only the leader of a political party; she was an important chapter in the history of Bangladesh. Considering her contributions, long political struggle and the emotional attachment of the people to her, the government declared her a "Very Important Person" of the state earlier this month.

She said many of Begum Khaleda Zia's initiatives and decisions took the country far ahead. She introduced free education and stipends for girls, which is regarded as a milestone in the advancement of women's education in Bangladesh.

The adviser said that Begum Khaleda Zia's role in the struggle for democracy, multi-party political culture and the establishment of people's rights in Bangladesh will remain memorable. 

Due to her uncompromising leadership, the nation was repeatedly freed from undemocratic situations, she noted, adding people will always remember her contributions to the country and the nation with respect.

Despite political differences, Sharmeen Murshid said, her long political journey for the welfare of the nation, people-oriented leadership and firm resolve always showed the way.

She added that Begum Khaleda Zia was the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh who led the fight to re-establish the democratic process against autocratic rule.
