Production of freshwater prawn, shrimp must be protected: Farida Akhter

KHULNA, Dec 28, 2025(BSS) - Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter today said freshwater prawn (Galda) and tiger shrimp (Bagda), which are highly recognized and appreciated internationally, must be conserved and their production should be increased in a planned manner.

She made the remarks at a view exchange meeting with the shrimp farmers after visiting a conserved shrimp farm at Gutudia Bardanga under Dumuria upazila here as chief guest.

The adviser said that cultivation of Galda and Bagda varieties has ensured the household nutrition as both the men and women are involved in this farming and it has been contributing in improving the household financial well-being and creating new employments.

The Galda variety is not farmed in many countries of the world, therefore, Galda is a matter of pride for Bangladesh, Farida Akhter said, adding that alongside taking effective initiatives to resolve the water logging by dredging, the government will provide necessary support to enhance farmers’ capacity through various projects.

The adviser listened attentively to the problems and proposals raised by the shrimp farmers and instructed the concerned departments to provide necessary support and coordination to address those issues. 

Representatives of the local administration, officials from the Department of Fisheries and the Department of Livestock Services and representatives involved in shrimp farming were present on the occasion.

Later, she visited the SS International Agro at Dhanibunia under Dumuria upazila and she was briefed on the institution’s various fisheries and livestock-based activities, production management and the development potential of the sector.

In addition, the adviser later visited the Buffalo Breeding and Development Farm at Kabirhat in Bagerhat district. During the visit, she was informed about the farm’s overall activities, buffalo breeding methods, feed management and other development initiatives. 

Director of the Khulna Divisional Livestock office Dr. Md. Golam Haider and Director of the Khulna Divisional Fisheries department Md. Jahangir Alam, along with other concerned officials, were present at that time.
