DHAKA, Dec 23, 2025 (BSS) - The European Union (EU) has underscored the
centrality of media freedom to Bangladesh's democratic transition, stressing
the need to promote and protect freedom of expression as the country moves
forward amid ongoing political reforms.
Marking International Migrants Day, the EU joined BRAC and Bangladeshi
authorities to recognise excellence in investigative journalism and reporting
on migration issues through the 10th media awards ceremony, said the EU
delegation here today.
The EU reiterated its support for safe, dignified and legal migration, while
firmly opposing exploitation, abuse and risks associated with irregular
migration.
On the occasion, the EU encouraged the interim government to finalise
provisions to include migrant smuggling in the proposed Prevention and
Suppression of Human Trafficking and Smuggling of Migrants Ordinance, 2025.
It also reaffirmed its determination to expand legal pathways for skilled and
semi-skilled regular migration from Bangladesh to EU member states.
As Bangladesh continues its transition and approaches elections, the EU, in
the presence of award-winning journalists, highlighted the vital role of a
free and independent media in ensuring transparency, accountability and
democratic progress.
