RANGPUR, Dec 14, 2025 (BSS) - The Martyred Intellectuals Day-2025 was celebrated with due dignity at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) today by paying tribute to the martyred intellectuals.
Marking the day, a condolence rally was held at the Domdoma massacre site in Rangpur city in the morning. Vice-chancellor of the university, Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali paid tribute to the memory of the martyrs by placing wreaths there.
Later, tributes were paid by various faculties, departments, offices and residential halls.
To mark the day, a discussion was organized on the second floor of the cafeteria on the campus with convener of the Martyr Intellectuals Day-2025 observance committee Professor Dr Md Ilias Pramanik in the chair.
Vice-chancellor of the university Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali addressed the discussion as the chief guest.
Remembering the martyred best sons of the nation, the Vice-chancellor said the nation got independence in exchange for not only the teachers as intellectuals, but also the lives of people from different professions in the country.
“Inspired by the supreme sacrifice of the martyred intellectuals, many young students including Shaheed Abu Sayeed played a leading role in the formation of an independent Bangladesh free from discrimination in the July Revolution,” he said.
The Vice-chancellor said that the intellectuals were murdered in various places in the country, including Dhaka University on December 14, 1971.
“Many intellectuals were also subjected to torture in the Rangpur region, some were martyred, and many went missing. Local history, memoirs, and research information bear clear testimony to their sacrifice,” he said.
He also said that everyone should participate in the progress of BRUR to turn the university into the best university in North Bengal,” he said.
Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Professor Dr Md Mizanur Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Life and Earth Science Professor Dr Md Emdadul Haque, and Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Professor Dr Md Nazrul Islam, spoke as special guests.
After the discussion, a prayer mahfil was held for the eternal peace of the departed souls of the martyrs.
Khatib of the BRUR Central Mosque Dr Rakib Uddin Ahmed conducted the prayer.
