Rules must be followed in hoisting national flag on Victory Day

DHAKA, Dec 14, 2025 (BSS) - On the great Victory Day on December 16, the flag will be hoisted atop of all government, semi-government, autonomous and private buildings as soon as the sun rises.

In addition, large national flags can be hoisted in Bangladesh embassies and missions abroad and on easily visible high-rise buildings in city corporations and Dhaka city, an official handout said.

According to the Rule 3 of the National Flag Rules of Bangladesh, 1972 (revised 2010), the ‘national flag’ will be dark green in colour and there will be a red circle in the middle of a rectangular green colour of 10:6 length and width.

The red circle will have a radius of one-fifth of the length of the flag. The centre of the circle will be at the intersection of a vertical line drawn from nine-twentieth part of the length of the flag and a horizontal line drawn from the midpoint of the width of the flag.

According to the rules, the front and backside of any vehicle, train or boat cannot be covered with the national flag. If hoisted with another flag, the Bangladesh flag will be horizontally to the right of the other flag. The flagpole of Bangladesh national flag will be placed in front of the other flagpole. No other flag can be hoisted on top of the national flag.

In case of hoisting the flags of two or more countries, each flag must be hoisted on a separate pole and the flags must be approximately the same size.

In case of displaying on a wall other than a pole, the flag must be displayed with the level of wall. In case of displaying in an auditorium or meeting, the flag must be displayed up behind the speaker.

In case of displaying in the middle of the road, the flag must be displayed upright. The national flag cannot be lowered or made to touch the ground in a graveyard. The flag cannot be directed downwards towards any person or object. The flag must never be made to touch the floor below, water, goods or any object. The flag must never be carried horizontally or flat. It should always be kept high and free.

The flag should not be hoisted, displayed, used or stored in a way that can be easily torn, soiled or damaged. The flag should not be used to receive, hold, carry or distribute anything. The flag should be hoisted and brought down with due respect.

The flag must be hoisted from sunrise to sunset in all cases except on motor vehicles, ships and aircraft. However, the flag may be kept hoisted at night during the session of parliament or the oath-taking ceremony of the president or ministers.

To display the national flag on a motor vehicle, the flagpole should be firmly attached to the chassis or radiator cap of the vehicle. Nothing can be written or printed on the flag.
The national flag of Bangladesh can be used following these rules and other rules and regulations amended from time to time, the handout added.
