DHAKA, Dec 11, 2025 (BSS) - The High Court today declared illegal the Election Commission's gazette that had detached Algi and Hamirdi unions under Bhanga upazila from Faridpur-4 constituency and attached them to Faridpur-2.
A High Court division bench, comprising Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Md Hamidur Rahman delivered the verdict, declaring absolute a rule it had issued earlier. The court also directed the authorities to cancel the previous gazette within 24 hours and issue a new one restoring Algi and Hamirdi unions to Faridpur-4 constituency.
Barrister Mohammad Humayun Kabir Pallob moved a writ petition filed in this connection. He told reporters that with today's verdict, Algi and Hamirdi unions of Bhanga upazilla have been reinstated in Faridpur-4.
The writ petition was filed by Md Shahidul Islam Babul, BNP nomination aspirant for Faridpur-4, Supreme Court lawyer Md Mahbubur Rahman Dulal, and three others, seeking the return of the two unions to the constituency. After hearing the petition, the High Court earlier issued the rule.
The Election Commission had previously issued a gazette attaching the two Bhanga upazila unions to Nagarkanda upazila under Faridpur-2 constituency.
The decision sparked several days of protests in Bhanga, including demonstrations, road blockades, and widespread vandalism at the upazila office, police station, and Election Commission office.
