DHAKA, Dec 4, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) has set a rare example in neonatal care as an extremely premature baby, born at just 25 weeks of gestation and weighing only 765 grams, has been discharged from the hospital in stable condition. 

The baby was born in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of BMU, where doctors described the case as "very risky" considering the circumstances and survival challenges associated with such premature births in Bangladesh.

According to BMU authorities, the baby was released on Thursday after weeks of intensive treatment and continuous monitoring.

Doctors said that despite the extremely low birth weight and critical condition, the dedicated efforts of the NICU team-supported by regular observation, Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC), proper temperature management, structured feeding, and coordinated nursing care-enabled the baby's gradual recovery.

Over time, the newborn's respiratory complications improved, feeding ability strengthened, and weight increased steadily, they added.

Before the baby was discharged, BMU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Md Shahinul Alam visited the NICU and met the family. He said the successful recovery highlights the commitment and expertise of BMU's neonatal team and stands as a significant milestone for newborn care in the country.
