DHAKA, Dec 3, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Limited (BGFCL) has started supplying additional 26 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) gas to the national grid from Habiganj-5 well.
“The well has been supplying gas around 26 mmcfd to the national grid after successfully workover of Habiganj well-5 today, which was 14 mmcfd earlier,” Chairman of Petrobangla Md Rezanur Rahman said after inaugurating the gas supply from the well in Habiganj today.
Managing Director of Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Limited (BGFCL) Professor Md Faruk Hossain along with BGFCL General Managers and concerned Project Directors and other officials were present at the function.
Rahman said that through the workover, Habiganj gas well-5 has been supplying additional 12 mmcfd to the national grid, which is playing a vital role in meeting the national energy demand.
Talking to BSS Project Director of BGFCL Mohammad Ismail Molla said that the workover of Habiganj-5 well was carried out by Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (Bapex).
He said that the Habiganj well-5 was drilled in 1988 with a depth of 3521 metre, while it was producing 14 mmcfd at 1521 PSI before the workover.
“The well is being worked over to increase gas production, lifetime, and continue gas supply safely and continuously by installing a new completion string, X-mass tree, and sub-surface safety valve,” Molla said.
The project director said that the workover of the well was started on October 24, 2025, which was completed on December 2, 2025.
According to the project, a total of two major gas sands (Upper Sand and Lower Sand) were found in the Habiganj field.
Out of a total of 11 wells under the Habiganj field, six wells were currently extracting and supplying about 90 mmcfd gas to the national grid from the Upper Gas Sand.
It said Habiganj well-5 has been producing gas from the Upper Gas Sand Structure, which will be able to produce gas for a long time.
“If the gas is being produced at a rate of 25 million cubic feet from Habiganj well-5, it is expected that 140 billion cubic feet of gas can be produced in 10-15 years,” the project director said.
The current market value (in terms of LNG price) of 140 billion cubic feet of gas produced from Habiganj well-5 is Taka 22,200 crore. The estimated cost for workover of Habiganj well-5 was Taka 75 crore.
