DHAKA, Nov 29, 2025 (BSS) - Dhwajo Mestrir Moron, a play centered on the life of a Manipuri carpenter, was staged today at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy's Experimental Theatre Hall, highlighting the fading traditions and cultural heritage of the Manipuri community amid the rapid spread of modernity.
Manipuri Theatre revived the production this evening, presenting a reimagined version of the play first staged in 2005 and later performed several times to strong audience reception. The new staging features refined elements and a blend of seasoned performers and emerging actors, the troupe said in a statement.
Based on a story by Smritikumar Singh, the play explores the tragic life of Dhwajo, a master craftsman known for building traditional Manipuri homes. Over the years, every house he constructed disappears -- except his own. But even that final symbol of his artistry is torn down by his sons as they embrace modern architecture. With the destruction of his home, Dhwajo's memories and identity fade, leaving him emotionally devastated. When neighbours gather the debris to throw it away, he imagines they are carrying off his own body.
The play was directed and dramatized by Shubhashish Sinha, with narration by Jyoti Sinha. Performed in a mix of Bangla and Bishnupriya Manipuri, the production aims to preserve the authenticity of the community's language and traditions.
Speaking to BSS, director Shubhashish Sinha said the play is part of a broader effort to revive Manipuri culture, which is gradually fading. "Many of our songs and traditions rooted in our community are disappearing day by day. It is our responsibility to revive our roots. I created this work out of duty to my community, and used the Manipuri language extensively to preserve its authenticity," he said.
The cast includes Samarjit Singh and Bidhan Singh as the younger and older Dhwajo, along with Swarnali Sinha, Shiuli Sinha, Subarna Sinha, Rajkanta Singh, Diptangshu Singh, Ruhit Singh, Simanto Singh, Anannya Sinha and Swarnali Sharma.
A second performance is scheduled for tomorrow at 7 pm at Jahangirnagar University's Selim Al Deen Muktamancho as part of the Arfi Cultural Festival.
