DHAKA, Nov 29, 2025 (BSS) - Retired Justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury, Chairman of the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances (CIED), today said integrity, impartiality, courage and competence of judges are the strongest guarantees of justice.
"A judge must try every case with equal zeal, rigor and devotion. Every morning when judges put on their robes, they should remember the words of the Constitution that the Republic shall be a democracy where all fundamental human rights and freedoms are protected," he said.
Justice Moinul made the remarks at a day-long workshop held at a hotel in Gulshan. The event was organized by the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances in collaboration with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Dhaka.
Addressing participating judges, he added, "Let us build a judicial system where even a hawker in Dhaka, a garment worker in Khulna or a rickshaw puller in Sylhet can say, 'We have faith in the courts; we have faith in the judicial system.'"
Huma Khan, Chief of Mission of the OHCHR in Dhaka, said that impartiality, professionalism and accountability of judges are essential to ensuring justice. She expressed deep concern over the fate of victims of enforced disappearances and the prolonged uncertainty faced by their families.
"Most of the victim families I have spoken to are suffering from social pressure and mental distress. Intimidation during case proceedings, investigation hurdles and pressure from influential circles have created major barriers to justice," she noted.
She praised the commission for carrying out its duties fairly and impartially, and thanked its chairman, members and all involved.
Commission members Justice Md. Farid Ahmed Shibli and Md. Nur Khan and Law and Justice Division Secretary Liaquet Ali Molla also spoke at the workshop. Commission member Md. Sajjad Hossain conducted the working session, while Dr. Nabila Idris moderated the event.
Around 90 participants, including judges from various courts and tribunals across the country, attended the workshop.
