DHAKA, Nov 26, 2026 (BSS) - Agriculture Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has announced that irregular fertilizer dealers across the country will be removed under the government's new policy.

"But, the existing lawful dealers will continue their operations," he said while briefing journalists on the country's overall agricultural situation after an Annual Development Program (ADP) review meeting at the Agriculture Ministry in Bangladesh Secretariat here today.

The adviser also said that new dealers will be appointed only in areas where no fertilizer dealers currently exist, according to a press release of the ministry.

Discussing recent agricultural concerns, he noted that many farmers have faced losses this season due to declining potato prices. 

About fifty percent of Aman paddy has already been harvested, and with favorable field conditions, a bumper yield is expected.

Addressing fertilizer-related issues, Jahangir, also Home Adviser, reassured that the country has adequate fertilizer stocks and no supply shortages. 

He added that fertilizer prices are not linked to gas price fluctuations, ensuring farmers will continue to receive fertilizer at fair prices.

On the onion market, the adviser said some groups are creating pressure to allow imports by portraying market instability. 

However, the government is prioritizing domestic production and fair pricing for farmers, and thus has temporarily halted onion imports. 

With summer onions beginning to enter the market and expected to arrive in full volume next month, he expressed confidence that there will be no onion crisis.

He also emphasized that ongoing recruitment within the Agriculture Ministry and its subordinate departments will be conducted with complete transparency.

Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Mohammad Emdad Ullah Mian, was also present during the briefing.
