DHAKA, Nov 17, 2025 (BSS) – Political parties have hailed the verdict of the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) that sentenced ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death for crimes against humanity committed during the  July-August 2024 mass uprising.

While giving reaction over the verdict, BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed today said the death sentence handed down to Sheikh Hasina in crimes against humanity case would serve as a precedent for Bangladesh's future political landscape.

"This verdict is not enough compared to the crime. But it establishes justice and sets an example for the days ahead. It sends a message that no one can again establish a fascist regime in this country, no one can turn themselves into a fascist, and autocracy will not take root here. This is a lesson for the future," he told reporters in an immediate reaction following the verdict at Dhaka University campus.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar said there is no room to question the death sentence verdict against Sheikh Hasina for crimes against humanity, describing the trial as transparent, impartial, and meeting international standards.

“The verdict clearly demonstrates how ruthless, vindictive, and heinous the accused were. Evidence, including newspapers, audio-visual material, and telephone conversations, was presented verbatim in the tribunal,” Parwar told a press conference this afternoon.

He emphasized that the trial was conducted transparently and impartially, in line with international standards. “Earlier trials against Jamaat leaders on charges of crimes against humanity did not meet international standards. Those cases were marred by fabricated charges, manipulated witnesses, biased judges, and predetermined verdicts,” he added.

Highlighting the historical and judicial significance of the verdict, Parwar said the trial fulfills, at least partially, the aspirations of Bangladesh’s 180 million citizens for justice against crimes against humanity—a demand that had been a priority even before national elections.

National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam called for speedy execution of the death sentence handed down to Sheikh Hasina by the International Criminal Tribunal-1 for her role in crimes against humanity during  July Uprising.

“Sheikh Hasina must be brought back to Bangladesh and the death sentence executed within a month. Unless the verdict is executed within the next month, the expectations of the people, the families of martyrs, and the injured fighters will remain unfulfilled,” he told a press conference at the party’s Banglamotor office this evening.
On behalf of the NCP, Nahid congratulated the student activists, the families of martyrs, and the wounded fighters who took part in the July Uprising.

He described the day as historic, noting that the crimes against humanity committed during the uprising by the Awami League and Sheikh Hasina have now been met with justice.

“The International Criminal Tribunal has sentenced the tyrant Sheikh Hasina to death for her crimes, and we welcome this verdict,” he said.

Nahid Islam recalled the struggle for justice during July–August Revolution.

“On the day when my brother Abu Saeed was killed, we pledged to secure justice for his murder. Today, we have received the verdict for the atrocities committed against thousands of July revolution martyrs and injured fighters,” he said.

In a statement issued today, AB Party has described the death sentence against Sheikh Hasina as ‘a complete vindication of the history of the victory of the oppressed against the exploiter’.

AB Party Chairman Mujibur Rahman Manju said the people’s faith in the path of justice and truth has been re-established, which will further strengthen the country's political culture.

In a statement, Bangladesh Labor Party Chairman Mostafizur Rahman Iran said the historic death sentence verdict of the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and then home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who were found guilty of mass killing during the 2024 July uprising, will remain as a unique example of justice.

Terming the verdict a victory of justice and a milestone, the Bangladesh Labor Party Chairman said today's verdict is a full recognition of justice against the most horrific atrocities committed by the state forces during the July movement.

He said this verdict is not just against two individuals, it is a groundbreaking judicial precedent against tyranny, fascism, abuse of power and treasonous crimes.

Iran said the sacrifices of the oppressed, the victims of mass killing and enforced disappearances did not go in vain.

Earlier today, the ICT-1 convicted and sentenced ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death for crimes against humanity committed during the July Mass Uprising, holding them guilty under the doctrine of superior command responsibility.

A three-member panel, headed by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder, delivered the verdict after finding them guilty on multiple charges.

The tribunal also found former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun guilty, but awarded him a "lenient sentence" of five years' imprisonment for making a full disclosure of the events and cooperating with investigators as approver.
