Sweets distributed in various districts over Hasina's death penalty

DHAKA, Nov 17, 2025 (BSS) – Sweets  have been distributed and jubilant procession was brought out in different districts over the verdict of the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) that sentenced ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina to death penalty for crimes against humanity committed during the  July-August 2024 mass uprising.

In the capital, members of the Nationalist Lawyers Forum Dhaka Bar today brought out a jubilant procession at the Dhaka lower court and distributed sweets  following the verdict.

The procession which started in front of the Dhaka Lawyers' Association, passed through the Metropolitan Magistrate's Court, the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court and ended in front of the lawyers' association.

Meanwhile, a large crowd gathered outside the International Crimes Tribunal-1 took place in jubilation following the pronouncement of the verdict.

As soon as the verdict was announced, people waiting outside the tribunal began cheering, chanting slogans celebrating the pronouncement of the verdict.

Members of the law enforcement agencies were on alert in and around the tribunal to maintain security and prevent any untoward incident.

Besides, the verdict drew crowds of families of those killed in July’s mass uprising, individuals injured during the demonstrations, and participants in the mass movement.

 Many of them gathered near the Mausoleum Gate of the Supreme Court premises, where they chanted slogans and expressed strong emotions as they reacted to the historic judgment.

The entire area remained charged with slogans and outpourings of jubilation, reflecting the sentiments of those who had long awaited the tribunal’s decision.
In Jahangirnagar University, students celebrated the death sentence against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina by hanging a symbolic effigy and distributing sweets following the verdict.

After the announcement of the verdict, Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union representatives and general students gathered in the university's Bot Tola area around 4:30 pm.

The students hung a symbolic effigy of Sheikh Hasina on a tree branch and later distributed sweets among the participants.

JUCSU General Secretary Mazharul Islam said, “The verdict stands as a historic document of justice against tyranny and oppression. The martyrs and injured victims of July have finally received due justice.”

In Rajshahi, leaders and workers of National Citizen Party (NCP) distributed sweetmeats in Shaheb Bazar Zero Point area this afternoon.

They also chanted various slogans during distribution of sweets . NCP’s city unit Convener Mobashwer Ali, Member-secretary Atiqur Rahman and Joint Conveners Sarwarul Haque Rabin and Nahidul Islam, among others, were present.

The NCP leaders expressed their satisfaction over the verdict given by the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1).

They demanded execution of the verdict after bringing Sheikh Hasina back to the country from India as early as possible. 

Meanwhile, BNP leader Nazrul Islam and his followers held a rally expressing satisfaction over Hasina’s verdict at Puthiya area in Rajshahi this afternoon.

Our Khulna Office reports that students and local residents distributed sweets in the city today following the verdict.

The programme was held at Shibbari Intersection, where participants demanded the speedy  execution of the verdict against Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.

Speaking to BSS, July fighter and student representative Ahmad Hamim Rahat said that participants expressed satisfaction over the verdict, and some distributed sweets as part of their reaction.

In Narayanganj, National Citizen Party (NCP) distributed sweets  over the death sentence given to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal in a case filed for crimes against humanity committed during the  July-August 2024 mass uprising. 

NCP leaders and activists gathered at Chashara Central Shaheed Minar in Narayanganj this afternoon. At this time, they cheered on the announcement of the verdict and distributed sweets  among commoners.

NCP central committee organiser (southern region) Shawkat Ali said they were satisfied with this verdict as about 1,400 people lost their lives at the directives of Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. 

“Today, the court delivered justice. We want to tell those who come to power in  future to learn from this incident. Those who stand against the people, the people will stand against them,” he said.

NCP district committee joint coordinator Ahmedur Rahman Tonu and district organisers Sonia Akhter (Lubna) and Fazle Rabbi were present, among others.

BSS Kishoreganj Correspondent reports that warriors of July’s Kishoreganj district unit distributed sweets  among the common people at Kalibari Chattar in the district town following the verdict.

The organization’s Kishoreganj unit member secretary Ashraful Islam Nadim said they distributed sweets hailing the verdict.

Earlier today, the ICT-1 convicted and sentenced ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death for crimes against humanity committed during the July Mass Uprising, holding them guilty under the doctrine of superior command responsibility.

A three-member panel, headed by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder, delivered the verdict after finding them guilty on multiple charges. 

The tribunal also found former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun guilty, but awarded him a "lenient sentence" of five years' imprisonment for making a full disclosure of the events and cooperating with investigators as approver.
