DHAKA, Nov 16, 2025 (BSS) - The concluding ceremony of the two-day academic session on “Evidence-Based Treatment Overview of Lung Cancer and Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy (SABR)” was held at the Clinical Oncology Department of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) today. 

Dr. Rafiqul Islam, Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Southend University Hospital, UK, was present as the keynote speaker in this scientific session.

He underscored the need for establishing a full-fledged research institute at BMU to accelerate progress in cancer research in Bangladesh, which he termed the demand of time at present, said a release. 

Speaking on the occasion, he discussed in detail the recent scientific advances in international guideline-based lung cancer treatment, staging and risk stratification, state of the art SABR technology and systemic therapy as well.

Special emphasis was given on providing treatment based on international guidelines, modern radiotherapy and SABR strategies, updates on systemic therapy, best practices in patient management.

BMU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr. Md Mujibur Rahman Howlader was present as the chief guest at the closing ceremony.

The key speaker highly appreciated the initiatives the BMU authorities, saying that such high-quality scientific sessions teach people an updated treatment of international standards and create an opportunity to acquire hands-on modern cancer management skills.

He also said that the most important thing for an oncologist is to always keep himself updated with modern evidence-based treatment, international guidelines and the latest advances in radiotherapy and systemic therapy as because modern and accurate knowledge can ensure the best treatment of the patient.

At that time, he specifically mentioned that it is essential to prepare the next generation of oncologists and accelerate Bangladesh's progress in cancer research.

Promising all-out cooperation in the implementation of this initiative, he hoped to continue their heartfelt involvement in BMU's academic activities in the days to come.

It was informed at the event that such international academic cooperation, scientific lecture series and specialized training will continue in the future as well, which will make a significant contribution to improving the quality of the country's cancer treatment system.
