Nat’l Port Strategy to be finalized within this year: Shipping Adviser

DHAKA, Nov 11, 2025 (BSS) - Adviser to the Ministry of Shipping and the Ministry of Labour and Employment Brigadier General (Retd) Dr. M. Sakhawat Hussain has said that the government is preparing a comprehensive national strategy titled the “National Port Strategy” aimed at sustainable and long-term development of the country’s land, river and sea ports.

Sakhawat made the remarks today while speaking at a stakeholder consultation meeting held at a hotel in the capital organized by the Ministry of Shipping and supported by the Government of Japan and JICA, to finalize the Bangladesh National Port Strategy 2025.

Dr. M. Sakhawat Hussain stated that the drafting of the National Port Strategy is at its final stage. He mentioned that the strategy will be completed within this year and to be implemented from January next year, said a handout.

He further said that the world’s leading ports are now operating through digitalization, attracting escalating foreign investment. 

The Adviser added that in order to attract more domestic and foreign investment in the maritime sector and to ensure an effective and sustainable port management system, the government initiated the development of the National Port Strategy soon after assuming office.

Highlighting that the strategy aims to establish a coordinated, modern, and robust port structure, the Shipping Adviser said, “A maritime single window will be launched to bring all port-centric services under one platform, enabling businesses to receive hassle-free services in the shortest possible time.” 

He noted that the formulation of the National Port Strategy marks the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s port management. 

He also said that the strategy emphasizes synchronizing the operations of sea ports, inland river ports, and land ports for unified and streamlined port activities. 

The Adviser also expressed optimism that the strategy will bring about a revolutionary transformation in the country’s maritime sector.

Presiding over the meeting, Secretary of the Ministry of Shipping, Dr. Nurun Nahar Chowdhury, expressed gratitude to the Government of Japan and JICA for their comprehensive support in developing the strategy. 

She noted that the National Port Strategy will open new prospects for modern port management. 

Chairman of the Chattogram Port Authority, Rear Admiral S. M. Moniruzzaman, delivered remarks as the focal person. Senior officials from the Ministry of Shipping and heads of various departments and agencies under the ministry were present.
