DHAKA, Nov 1, 2025 (BSS)- Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter today said loss of open water bodies in the country causes depleting sweet water fishes. 

“The quantity of open water fish is declining in the country as open water bodies are being encroached in various ways,” she said.

Farida said this while speaking as the chief guest at the closing session of the two-day “CAB Youth Parliament 2025,” organized by the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) at the Mozaffar Ahmad Chowdhury Auditorium at Dhaka University.

The adviser said high price of electricity is one of the major concerns of the country’s fish and poultry farmers.  Electricity used in agriculture is subsidized, but fish and poultry farmers are charged at commercial rates, she said.
 
She added that if the same rate as agriculture is applied to them, the government would need to provide Tk 400 crore in subsidies.

She also said that urban people waste a large amount of electricity while rural areas suffer from frequent load shedding. There is an inequality in electricity distribution in our country, she added.
