JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, Sept 18, 2025 (BSS) - The newly elected leaders of Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU) today took oath, pledging to uphold students' rights, strengthen democracy on campus and contribute to the university's development.

Vice-Chancellor and JUCSU President Prof Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan administered the oath at around 4:30 pm at the university's Senate Hall.

The ceremony was attended by deans, provosts, teachers, officers, employees, students and family members of the martyrs of the July Uprising.

JUCSU GS Mazharul Islam said the oath-taking marked the beginning of their responsibility. "We are determined to fight for the rights of students. With the support of all students, we will dedicate ourselves in the coming one year to achieve their rights," he asserted.

JUCSU VP Abdur Rashid Zitu termed the election a milestone for students deprived of representation for over three decades. "For 33 long years, JU students had no platform to speak for their rights. From now on, we will work together with everyone for the development of Jahangirnagar University," he said.

Proctor and JUCSU Election Commission's Member Secretary Prof Dr A K M Rashidul Alam described the polls as the most acceptable election in JU's history.

He noted there was no evidence of irregularities and all video footage had been preserved.

"If anyone questions the election, it is for personal interest. The responsibility of protecting the university's dignity lies with everyone. Institution is greater than individual," he said, adding that smooth cooperation from administration, candidates, students, police, BGB, and Ansar ensured the successful completion of the polls.

Chief Election Commissioner Prof Md Maniruzzaman emphasized that JUCSU is the rightful platform of students' rights. "According to the law of the university, the rights that belong to students must continue through JUCSU. Students are everything, we are just facilitators," he said.

JU Pro-VC (Administration) Prof Sohel Ahmed said, "For so long, there was no one to speak on behalf of students' rights. After 33 years, the JUCSU election has been held, and this is a milestone for us."

Pro-VC (Academic) Prof Mahfuzur Rahman said, "Students elected you with hopes and confidence. I expect that problems will now be resolved in an orderly manner. We believe that JUCSU leaders will play a pioneering role in bringing positive changes to the university."

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan recalled that the July 2024 Uprising carried the commitment to restore democracy.

"Democracy was lost in Bangladesh, but the process of regaining it has started through students' union elections. We believed that the holding of DUCSU and JUCSU elections could create a possibility for national elections. Jahangirnagar University has tried its best, even within a limited sphere, to contribute to the broader process of restoring democracy in Bangladesh," he said.
