DHAKA, Aug 27, 2025 (BSS)- Agriculture Adviser Lt Gen (retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today said the mini cold storage technology will be taken to farmers at grassroots in future to facilitate them to store food grains and vegetables.
“The mini cold storage technology is an epoch-making initiative to preserve the food grains and bring sustainability in the agriculture economy. So, the technology will be reached at the doorsteps of farmers at grassroots in future,” he said.
He made the remarks while inaugurating the Farmers’ Mini Cold Storage at Medulia area under Dhalla Union of Singair Upazila in Manikganj district.
He said the farmers can set up mini cold storage at their houses at lower cost, if necessary, which help them preserve their produced food grains and vegetables.
A huge quantity of vegetables is being grown during the winter season and most of them are rotted due to having no preservation facilities and thus they face massive losses, he said.
Installing such mini cold storage can reduce the amount of losses of the farmers, he opined.
About the fake and spurious seeds, the Adviser said they will take tougher legal action if they receive any complaints to this end.
The Home Adviser said they are now in hot pursuit to protect the arable lands. “A law to protect the agricultural lands will be enacted in five to six months,” he added.
In this connection, he said if the law is enacted the affected people will get compensation three times higher than that of the actual price of the land which will be acquired by the LGED.
The affected people earlier only get compensation three times higher if the Roads and Highway Division acquires land for constructing roads, he also said.
Agriculture Secretary Dr. Mohammad Emdad Ullah Mian and Director General, Department of Agricultural Extension Md. Saiful Alam were present, among others.
The programme to distribute 100 farmers’ mini cold storages through expansion of the cost-effective technology at the finance from the trust fund of the climate change to enhance the income of the farmers to mitigate the risk arising from the adverse impact of the climate change.
Installing one room based mini cold storage requires Taka 500,000 and it can store 10 tonnes of goods. The setting up of mini cold storage required 70 percent less cost than that of the conventional cold storage.
