DHAKA, Aug 25, 2025 (BSS) - Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today said they will take legal steps to repatriate a Bangladeshi police officer arrested in India's West Bengal on charges of intrusion.
"We are taking steps to repatriate the police officer through Interpol," he said while replying to a question from journalists after coming out of a Core Committee meeting on the law and order at the Home Ministry in Bangladesh Secretariat here.
Steps may also be taken to bring the police official back through Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), he said.
According to Indian news agency ANI, members of India's Border Security Force (BSF) detained Md Arifuzzaman between 6:00pm and 7:00pm on Saturday near the Hakimpur border outpost in West Bengal.
Later, the BSF handed the officer over to West Bengal police.
He was serving as Assistant Commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police during last year's Anti-Discrimination Movement.
Arifuzzaman's name also appeared on the list of accused in the charge sheet submitted to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in the Abu Sayeed murder case.
