Cyber security in banking sector major challenge ahead of elections: Faiz

DHAKA, Aug 19, 2025 (BSS) - Ensuring cyber security in Bangladesh’s banking sector remains a major challenge ahead of the upcoming national elections, said Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology.

Speaking at a seminar titled “Cyber in Financial Sector of Bangladesh: Security in Digital Future”, at a city hotel, Faiz said, "Only 17 to 20 banks have satisfactory cyber-security ratings."

He warned of rising threats including financial crimes, gambling, out-dated software, vulnerabilities in file transfer protocols, DDoS attacks and risks to data centers.

The event was jointly organized by the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) and the EDGE Project under the ICT Division.

Dr Anisuzzaman Chowdhury, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser at the Ministry of Finance, stressed the need for strengthening public-private partnerships to boost cyber-security awareness and resilience.

Financial Institutions Division Secretary Najma Mobarek urged better coordination between banks’ IT and business units while National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan proposed enhancing tax collection through improved data exchange with banks.

Representatives from BRAC Bank, IFIC Bank and City Bank also shared insights on addressing technical issues in the sector.

With ICT Division Secretary Shish Haider Chowdhury in the chair, senior officials and stakeholders from the ICT and financial sectors attended the event.

The speakers unanimously emphasized that strong cyber-security is vital not only for digital advancement but also for ensuring public trust and the stability of the financial system.
