RAJSHAHI, July 24, 2025 (BSS)- A three-day short course on wind energy began at Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) here today.
Institute of Energy and Environmental Studies (IEES) is hosting the course on “Harnessing the Wind: Analytical, Numerical and Experimental Approaches to Wind Energy” where 108 teachers, students and others working with wind energy are taking part.
Salient features of the course are quiz competition and group discussion that will create scopes of sharing bilateral experiences.
Director of the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell Prof Imdadul Haque, Director of Institute of Information and Communication Technology Prof Zahurul Islam Sarker and IEES Director Prof Nurul Islam addressed the opening session with IEES Associate Professor Dr Mahadi Hassan Masud in the chair.
Seven experts from China, Australia, Sweden and the host RUET are conducting the training sessions as resource persons.
Prof Nurul Islam said wind energy harnesses the power of wind to generate electricity, offering a clean, renewable, and increasingly cost-effective energy source.
It has numerous benefits, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions, lower operating costs after installation, and the creation of jobs.
However, it also presents challenges such as intermittency (reliance on wind availability), visual impact, and potential effects on wildlife, he added.
Dr Mahadi Hassan Masud attributed that wind is a naturally replenishing resource, making it a sustainable energy source.
Wind turbines produce electricity without emitting greenhouse gases or air and water pollutants during operation.
He said initial installation costs of wind energy is high, but operational costs for wind farms are relatively low, especially compared to fossil fuel-based power plants.
The wind energy industries create huge scope for jobs in its manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and operational sites.
