National Fisheries Week-2025 begins tomorrow

DHAKA, July 21, 2025 (BSS) – The government has chalked out an elaborate programme to observe the National Fisheries Week-2025 from tomorrow aimed at raising mass awareness and building sanctuaries to boost production of various species of fishes.

The theme of this year’s National Fisheries Week-2025 is – “Building Sanctuaries, Increase the Production of Local Fishes”.

Besides, National Fisheries Medal-2025 will be distributed among 16 persons and organizations in seven categories this year for recognizing their contribution in fisheries sector, said Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter at a media briefing on the eve of the National Fisheries Week-2025.

The weeklong event will be observed across the country jointly at central, district and upazila level from July 22-28. 

The programmes, which were chalked out to observe the event included distribution of fisheries medal, organizing various awareness programmes, rallies, discussion, seminar and workshop and exhibition.

The adviser said the event has been decorated specially for paying respect to the martyrs and injured of the July uprising.

The contribution of the fisheries sector undeniable in providing safe protein and fulfilling nutritional demand of the people, the adviser said. The sector is also playing an important role in employment generation, export expansion, achieving foreign currency and socio-cultural development, she added.

Bangladesh has open water body of 38.6 lakh hectares and 8.5 lakh hectares closed water bodies and a long 1,18,813 square kilometers sea water areas are our vast fisheries resources source, she said.

The government has taken and implementing effective and time befitting action plan for protecting, development, management, sustainable procurement and production of the fisheries resources and that’s why the country is self sufficient in fisheries production, she added.
