Over 12 lakh receive govt legal aid since 2009

DHAKA, June 25, 2025 (BSS) -The National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO) has extended legal assistance to over 12, 26,000 individuals across Bangladesh since 2009, according to a recently published report on its official website.

The comprehensive report details the scope of legal aid services provided under the Legal Aid Services Act, aimed at supporting financially indigent and legally disadvantaged citizens. 

As of May 2025, a total of 12, 26,019 people have received government-funded legal support.

Of this figure, legal aid has been provided in 4, 28,301 court cases involving underprivileged litigants. 

Additionally, 9, 78,992 individuals were assisted through Legal Aid Offices in all 64 districts while 29,168 people received aid via the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office. Some 29,331 workers were supported through the Legal Aid Cells in Dhaka and Chattogram.

A total of 1,88,528 people received guidance and support through the toll-free National Helpline (16430).

The initiative is part of the government's ongoing efforts to ensure equal access to justice for all citizens, particularly those unable to afford legal representation. The services are rendered free of charge under the provisions of the Legal Aid Act, reaffirming the state's commitment to uphold the rights of its most vulnerable populations.
