DHAKA, June 25, 2025 (BSS) -The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking will be observed in the country like elsewhere in the world tomorrow to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving a world free of drug abuse.

It is being observed annually on 26 June, since 1989.

Chief Adviser (CA) Professor Muhammad Yunus issued a message on this occasion, saying: "I am happy to know that the 'International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking' is being celebrated in Bangladesh like other countries of the world."

Noting that drug trafficking and abuse is a multifaceted and complex problem, Dr Yunus said a significant part of the country's youth today is losing their talent and creativity due to drugs.

"Drug abuse is having an extremely negative impact on various elements and indicators close to life, including public health and economy. The peace and security of the country are being disrupted," he added.

To prevent the spread of drugs in Bangladesh, he said, all law enforcement agencies, including the Department of Narcotics Control, Police, RAB, BGB, Coast Guard and the field administration must work together with the utmost professionalism.

The Chief Adviser said there is a need for public awareness and public involvement in eradicating drugs.

"Therefore, a drug-free Bangladesh must be built through social movements by creating widespread awareness among the people," he stated.

He strongly urged the government, non-governmental organizations, civil society, teachers, guardians, religious leaders, students, doctors, social workers, print and electronic media and people from all walks of life to come forward unitedly to solve the drug problem.

Dr Yunus wished all the programmes undertaken on the occasion of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2025 a success.
