JASHORE, May 24, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh Press Council (BPC) Chairman Justice A K M Abdul Hakim today said that alongside the freedom of the media and journalists, their professional and social responsibilities are equally important.
To uphold these responsibilities, journalists must focus on presenting accurate and objective news to prevent misinformation, he added.
Justice Hakim made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a training workshop here organized by the Press Council in collaboration with the Jashore District Administration.
Titled "Preventing Misreporting in the Media and Publishing Objective News," the event was chaired by Jashore Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md. Azaharul Islam.
Press Council Secretary Md. Abdus Sabur, Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Noor-e-Alam Siddiqui, and Jashore Press Club President Zahid Hasan Tukun, among others, also spoke.
In his speech, Justice Hakim criticized the "ideological profiteering" of the previous fascist government and said, "The spirit of the liberation war will definitely remain, but may Allah forgive us for what has been done with this spirit."
He also remarked that although journalists had representation in all government institutions related to media, they failed to act in the interest of journalism and the press.
Stating that all professionals, including journalists, must be free from the divisions of party politics, he said, "If we cannot move out from these divisions, another 53 years will pass, and nothing will change."
