Home Adviser assures of shifting Shammo murder probe to DB

DHAKA, May 18, 2025 (BSS) – Home Adviser Lieutenant General Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) today assured that the investigation into a Dhaka University (DU) student Shammo murder case will be shifted   to the Detective Branch (DB) of police. 
     
He was given the assurance when a DU delegation led by its Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan   called on the adviser at his ministry’s office in Bangladesh Secretariat. 
 
Director (Acting) of the Institute of Education and Research (IER) of DU Professor Hosne Ara Begum and student representatives were present during the meeting. 
    
After coming out of the meeting, Hosne Ara Begum said they met the Home Adviser and discussed holding the trial in the Shammo murder case in a fair manner at the quickest possible time.
 
“The Home Adviser gave a patient hearing and took a note of the discussion and told us that they are trying their best in this regard”, she said. 
 
One of the friends of Shammo, SS Nahin, also a delegation member said that they have given Shahbagh police station a 48-hour ultimatum, but the progress in the case was not satisfactory. 
 
The principal accused behind the killing of Shammo are yet to be arrested since five days have already elapsed after the murder.
 
He continued that the Home Adviser assured us that the investigation into the Shammo murder case will be shifted to the DB and at the same time the law ministry said that the trial of the case will be held under Special Tribunal.
 
Nahin said they will inform their next programme from the campus. 
 
He said they want to trust the assurance of the Home Adviser and hope that the killers of Shammo will soon be arrested and bring to justice. 
 
Shahriar Alam Shammo, 25, a student of the 2018–19 academic sessions of the Institute of Education and Research (IER) department of the DU was stabbed to death at Suhrawardi Udyan area, adjacent to the campus late Tuesday night.
