DHAKA, May 16, 2025 (BSS) – Although Nurjahan Begum, wife of Feni's controversial former, MP, Nizam Uddin Hazari, was not involved in any profession or any legally income generating activity, but she owned huge property and bank balance beyond her known source of income.
Nurjahan Begum, like her husband Nizam Hazari leader of Awami League, amassed huge money and wealth illegally in just a few years, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) official told BSS here today.
He said the ACC after investigating into allegations over corruption and irregularities of former MP Nizam Uddin Hazari and his wife Nurjahan Begum found out about the huge properties and bank balance.
The ACC filed a petition in the court to seize and freeze the assets and the court ordered the ACC to take necessary measures, including freezing their properties and bank accounts.
According to ACC findings, Nizam Hazari invested Tk. 11.68 crore in six companies, while his wife invested Tk. 26.28 crore in eight companies.
Hazari purchased land 1300 decimal in Feni Municipality area for a deed value of Tk. 53.94 crore. Besides, he and his wife owned a flat at Gulshan.
Besides, Nurjahan Begum owned three flats in Gulshan along with three flats at Paltan, Mohammadpur and Kakrail. She also owned a four-storey building on four katha land at Mohammadpur, two flats in Chittagong and a garden house at in Joydevpur. Estimated value of all those properties was Tk.14.52 crore.
Nizam Hazari deposited over Tk. 12.60 crore in 36 bank accounts, while Nurjahan deposited Tk. 3.58 crore in 20 bank accounts.
However, the ACC official mentioned that the actual market value of the flats, plots and land acquired by Nurjahan Begum in Dhaka and Chittagong is much higher.
Nurjahan also had an arms license for her own safety and moved with her own bodyguard, the ACC official said.
ACC Deputy Director Mohammad Nurul Huda conducted investigations and found these movable and immovable assets, including money deposited in various banks.
Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain's court (Permission Petition 207/2025) ordered freezing of these assets and directed the concerned authorities not to transfer these assets granting the ACC’s plea.
ACC said that they found a flat number having 2,470 square feet under Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) in Gulshan with joint name of Nizam Hazari and his wife Nurjahan Begum. The value of the flat is estimated at Tk. 74.10 lakh.
The ACC also found five more flats in the capital, which deed value is Tk. 3 crore.
ACC said that Nurjahan owned 49.50 kathas of land in two separate documents in the capital's Katasur Mouza of Mohammadpur at Tk. 49.75 lakh. On November 29, 2017, a garden house was purchased on 60 percent of the land in Ghatarchar, Keraniganj for only Tk.60 lakh.
Besides, they owned 15 acres of land at Ramgarh, Khagrachari, 1 acre and 9.10 decimal of land at Joydevpur, Gazipur and 4.95 decimal of land at same place.
ACC investigation found that Tk. 19.29 crore is deposited in bank accounts in Meghna Bank, Global Islami Bank, NCC Bank and FSIBL Bank.
The ACC official said that legal action has been taken against Nizam Hazari his wife for acquiring illegal assets.
After investigation it was clear that Nizam Hazari misused his power and acquired illegal assets in the name of his wife.
