DHAKA April 30, 2025 (BSS) – Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan today put emphasis on enriching the list of Geographical Indication (GI) status of Bangladeshi products commercially.
“The GI products cherish our history and tradition and total 55 products have already received GI recognition till date . . . fair recognition and remuneration must be ensured for the marketers of these products,” he told a function.
The industries adviser said the participation of all concerned, including the government, is essential while local entrepreneurs or producers will be empowered subsequently.
He was speaking at the “World Intellectual Property Day 2025” discussion, organized by the ‘Department of Patents, Industrial Designs and Trademarks of the Ministry of Industries at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital today.
Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostafa Sarwar Farooki attended it as speaker while Industries Secretary Md Obaidur Rahman presided over there. Eminent Actress and Cultural Personality Armin Musa presented the keynote paper on Intellectual Property Day’s discussion.
Noting that intellectual property is one of the rights recognized for humans as stated in the International Human Rights Charter, Adilur said, “Music is not just entertainment. It is a unique expression of emotions, feelings and culture of the humanity.”
He added that behind the melody and rhythm of each song, there is countless creative labor and it is important to protect the intellectual property rights of music for creativity and innovation as well.
Speaking on the occasion, Cultural Adviser Mostafa Sarwar Farooki said the music is an important cultural festival of Bangladesh, through which country’s people express their feelings.
The copyright of music must be ensured, the cultural adviser added.
In the function, registration certificates of 24 GI products were issued. The certificates of GI products were handed over to the Bangladesh Weaving Board, the District Commissioner of the concerned district and the Nakfazli Mango Growers Cooperative Society of Badalgachi Upazila of Naogaon.
The 24 GI products with registration certificates (certificate numbers in brackets) are: Narsingdi's Latkan (32), Madhupur's Pineapple (33), Bhola's Buffalo Milk Curd (34), Magura's Hazrapuri Litchi (35), Sirajganj's Gamcha (36), Sylhet's Monipuri Saree (37), Mirpur's Katan Saree (38), Dhakai Footy cotton (39), Comilla's Khadi (40), Brahmanbaria's Chanamukhi Sweet (41), Gopalganj's Bronze Jewelry (42), Sundarban's Honey (43), Sherpur's Chanaar Paees (44), Sirajganj's Lungi (45), Gazipur's Jackfruit (46), Kishoreganj's Rataboro Paddy (47), Ashtagram's Ponir (48), Barisal's Amra (49), Bedsheets from Kumarkhali (50), Bedana Litchi of Dinajpur (51), Munshiganj’s Patakshir (52), Nakfajli Mango of Naogaon (53), Jamurki’s Sandesh of Mirzapur in Tangail (54) and Futicarpas Cotton Seeds and Trees of Dhaka (55).
