DHAKA, April 29, 2023 (BSS) - The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues has welcomed the progress towards the implementation of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Peace Accord in its report on its 22nd session held in New York from April 17-28.
During the session, members of the civil society representing Bangladesh's minority groups highlighted the achievements of the Bangladesh government in implementing the CHT Peace Accord in various meetings of the forum, said in an official release today.
Besides, the forum welcomed the various information presented by the Bangladesh delegation on the progress of the implementation of the accord.
They requested Bangladesh to make more efforts for the full implementation of the accord through constructive discussions and cooperation with the Chittagong Hill Tracts Regional Council, the three hill district councils and Chittagong Hill Tracts Land Dispute Resolution Commission.
Bangladesh is committed to achieving inclusive and sustainable development of its people including the ethnic minorities and its government is working sincerely in implementing the historic CHT Peace Accord, which was signed in 1997 under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the release added.
Muhammad Abdul Muhith, permanent representative of Bangladesh to the UN, said that implementation of CHT peace accord is an integral part of the country's long term plan to build an inclusive and peaceful Bangladesh.
The government's efforts to implement the agreement have already brought visible changes in the lives of Bangladesh's minority communities and these efforts will continue in the days to come, he added.
