Begum Zia worked devotedly to consolidate democracy: Speaker

DHAKA, May 22, 2026 (BSS) - Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikram today said former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia worked with utmost dedication to consolidate democracy in the country. 

He stressed her profound commitment to establishing public rights and remarked that her legacy stands as a unique example of successful statesmanship.

The Speaker made these remarks as the chief guest during a cover-unveiling ceremony for a calendar titled "DeshNetri," published by 'Chobir Golpo' in memory of the former Prime Minister. The event took place this evening at the LD Hall of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

Terming Begum Zia as his political inspiration, the Speaker described her as an integral part of Bangladesh's history in developing political leadership. He added that the deep affection and tears of millions of people upon her passing proved she was a truly pro-people leader.

Highlighting her contributions, Jatiya Sangsad Chief Whip Nurul Islam noted that Begum Zia introduced the caretaker government system to give a permanent and institutional shape to democracy in the country.

The function was chaired by Atiqur Rahman Ruman, Additional Press Secretary to the Prime Minister and Advisory Editor of 'Chobir Golpo'. The event was also addressed by Advocate Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas MP, Special Assistant to the former Prime Minister and Habibur Rahman Habib, Advisor to the BNP Chairman.
