Restoring public confidence in police our priority: PM

DHAKA, May 09, 2026 (BSS)- Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said restoring people’s confidence in police and improving law and order is the priority of the government.

The Prime Minister said in a message on the National Police Week-2026. A four-day programme marking the week begins tomorrow.

The PM said a professional and responsible police force is very important to safeguard country’s stability and public confidence. The police week is a unique moment to fulfill the commitment of police to be a reliable force, he said.

Tarique Rahman said the present government is implementing an elaborate programme to build a prosperous, self reliant and justice-based democratic country. But the target would be difficult to achieve without making the public life secured and relaxed. 

As a law enforcing agency the role of police is very important. In every national crisis the force have played their role very professionally and sincerely. 

The role of police in the last general election has clearly manifested that police can work efficiently if they get a congenial and favourable atmosphere. 

Not only in the country, the police force have showed their success in the international arena also, the prime minister said adding their contribution in the UN peace keeping missions has glorified the dignity of Bangladesh.

The prime minister said a democratic government has been established through a free and fair election after a long one and half decade. Peace and relief also has been returned to public life. People now want to see a country free from a culture of disappearance, abduction and fear.

So, the police forces must have to play a highest role to maintain such a peaceful society, he added.

The prime minister urged police to play more effective role in curbing mob violence, teenage gang and drug. It is indispensible to ensure stability of the state to keep the democratic progress of the country sustainable, he said.

On the week, the prime minister greeted all former and incumbent members of the police force. He also wished every success of the police week.
