CHITTAGONG UNIVERSITY, Sept 7, 2026 (BSS) - The High Court has stayed the expulsion and cancellation of certificates of Afsana Enayet Emi, a law student at Chittagong University (CU), who was expelled for assaulting and slapping an assistant proctor on duty.

Afsana's lawyer, Advocate Moshtaq Ahmed Chowdhury, confirmed the matter to BSS this night, stating that a High Court bench comprising Justice Md. Habibul Gani and Justice Syed Mohammad Tajrul Hossain delivered the verdict lifting the permanent expulsion order about a month ago.

Advocate Chowdhury said, "The High Court division revoked the permanent expulsion order against Afsana Emi and upheld a six-month suspension, which has already expired. At the same time, the court directed the university authorities to return all her honours and master's degree certificates."

"Following the verdict, the CU authorities were asked whether they would appeal the decision. Later, they decided not to pursue an appeal. Consequently, there are no longer any legal barriers for Afsana Emi to receive her honours and master's certificates," he added.

On the night of February 5, 2025, when agitated students attempted to vandalize the 'boat symbol' and a mural of Sheikh Hasina at the university's then Sheikh Hasina Hall (now Bijoy 24 Hall), they faced resistance from some resident female students. 

As a scuffle ensued, the university's proctorial body rushed to the spot to control the situation. At one point, Afsana Enayet Emi, a resident student of the hall, slapped Assistant Proctor Prof. Dr. Md. Korban Ali.

Later on February 11, a video of the slapping incident went viral on social media, sparking widespread protests on campus demanding exemplary punishment for the student. 

In response, a meeting of the university's Board of Residence, Health and Disciplinary Committee, held at the VC's office at 3:00pm on February 13, decided to permanently expel her and revoke her academic certificates.
