CHATTOGRAM, Sept 2, 2026 (BSS)- An alleged drug dealer Md. Shafiqul Islam has been sentenced to life imprisonment following the recovery of 4,300 pieces of yaba tablets by the Karnaphuli Police Station in 2019. 

In this case, another defendant Monirul Islam has been acquitted. The verdict was delivered by the court of Chattogram Fifth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md. Tajul Islam today.
 
Md. Shafiqul Islam, aged 46, is the son of the late Abdul Sheikh and hailed from the Kushtia district. Reports indicated that the alleged drug dealer was apprehended during a raid conducted in front of the Karnaphuli CNG and Filling Station in the Moizartek Mor area of the Karnaphuli Police Station at 11:40 pm on July 7, 2019.
 
During the search, a red shopping bag he was carrying was examined, revealing 4,300 pieces of contraband yaba tablets concealed within 10 tubes of Betnovate-Cream. During police interrogation, Shafiqul stated that he had purchased the Yaba pills from one Monirul Islam.
 
Subsequently, a case was initiated against both individuals under the Narcotics Control Act. 

The trial commenced with the framing of charges in court on December 7, 2021. 

According to the Court Bench Assistant SM Kawsar Sagar, testimonies from five out of eight witnesses were recorded. 

After evaluating the evidence, the court found Shafiqul Islam guilty, sentencing him to life imprisonment along with a fine of Taka 20,000, in default, to suffer six months more in jail.
