NOAKHALI, July 6, 2026(BSS) - A court here today awarded death penalty to an accused for rape and murder of a minor girl and fined him Taka one lakh for the same.

Judge of the Women and Children’s Repression Prevention Tribunal of the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court of Noakhali Farzana Akjhter handed down the judgment today convicting one Shahdat (26), the lone accused of the case.
 
The victim was the daughter of Maulna Shahjahan of Mridhabari of Megha village under Badalcot union of Noakhali sadar upazila.

According to the case records, Asma, a five-year old girl went missing on March 24 in 2022 and her body was recovered from a safety tank behind their home nine days after she went missing. Police also arrested one Shahdat from the village on that day.

Police said arrested Shahdat later told the court that he raped the girl and strangulated her before dumping the body into the safety tank. His confessional statement was recorded by a first class magistrate under section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).

The incident created huge reaction among various cross section of people of the district and they demanded his exemplary punishment tried by a speedy trial tribunal.

Advocate Selim Shahi, Public Prosecutor (PP) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Court expressed satisfaction over the judgment and said justice would be ensured in the society through this judgment.
