5 on two-day remand over Rangpur Hindu village attack

RANGPUR, July 31, 2025 (BSS) – A court today granted a two-day remand for five individuals arrested in connection with the attack, vandalism, and looting in the Hindu village of Aldadpur Balapara in Betgari Union of Gangachara upazila of the district.
 
Senior Judicial Magistrate Krishna Kamal Roy of Gangachara Cognizance Court passed the order during the hearing of a five-day remand prayer submitted by Officer-in-Charge (OC) and Investigation Officer of the case, Al Emran, from Gangachara Model Police Station.
 
“Efforts to arrest the other individuals involved in the attacks and vandalism are ongoing,” Investigation Officer Al Emran told BSS tonight.
 
The five accused taken on remand are Md Yasin Ali, 25, Swadhin Mia, 28, Ashraful Islam, 28, SM Atiqur Rahman Khan, 28, and Saddam Hossain Selim, 22, from different villages in nearby Kishoreganj upazila of Nilphamari district.
 
Earlier, on July 26, attacks took place in the Hindu village over a religiously provocative Facebook post by a young student, Ranjan Kumar Roy.
 
Later, police arrested him under the Digital Security Act.
 
The detained teenager was sent to a juvenile rehabilitation center through the court on July 27.
 
Gangachara Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mahmud Hasan Mridha told BSS that normalcy has returned to Aldadpur Balapara village, where reconstruction of the damaged houses was completed by Wednesday.
 
All 22 families are now residing in their rebuilt homes.

The village has returned to peace, and the law and order situation has stabilized. The army and police remain engaged in security arrangements.
 
He said a total of 28 bundles of corrugated iron sheets, necessary wood and bamboo, and other required materials were provided to repair and rebuild the houses, along with 38 sacks of food items, 10 cooking stoves, and three tube wells.
