SANGSAD BHABAN, July 8, 2026 (BSS) – Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today told the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) that his government has undertaken multi-dimensional initiatives to transform agriculture into a technology-driven sustainable sector.
“The government has undertaken multi-dimensional initiatives to transform agriculture from a traditional and labour-intensive system into a technology-driven, profitable, competitive and sustainable sector through research, modern technology, innovation and mechanization,” he said.
The Leader of the House said this while replying to a question from treasury bench lawmaker from Cumilla-9 Md Abul Kalam with Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, in the chair this afternoon.
Highlighting various government measures to improve the country's agricultural system, the Prime Minister said efforts are underway to digitalise and modernise agriculture by expanding the use of digital technologies in agricultural management.
He said initiatives have been taken to introduce farmer registration, a farmers' database, digital agricultural services, mobile-based weather information, market information, agricultural advisory services, expanded e-extension services and online platforms for agricultural services.
The premier said the government has launched the distribution of the Farmer Card to ensure direct delivery of government services to farmers.
He said around 2.75 crore farmers across the country are being brought under a digital platform through the programme.
Tarique Rahman said agricultural mechanisation is being expanded to reduce production costs, address labour shortages and make farming more profitable.
He said the government has also undertaken initiatives to expand the use of remote sensing, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), drone technology, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), satellite data, big data and other modern information technologies to modernise the agricultural sector.
According to the Prime Minister, these technologies will make crop health and yield monitoring, disease detection, precision fertiliser and irrigation management, and production planning more effective and science-based.
The Leader of the House said the introduction of precision agriculture based on modern technology and data would reduce production costs and increase farmers' incomes.
He also said the agricultural sector would be restructured and further developed through appropriate incentives to ensure balanced, safe and nutritious food production.
The head of the government said farmers are being provided with advice on which crops are most suitable for specific regions and seasons, fertiliser requirements and weather forecasts.
The government has also taken initiatives to reduce dependence on chemical fertilisers by promoting the use of organic fertilisers, biofertilisers and environmentally friendly agricultural technologies, he added.
The premier said agriculture would be transformed into a climate-smart and climate-resilient sector to address the impacts of climate change.
Tarique Rahman said the government's initiatives would make agriculture more productive, profitable, export-oriented and sustainable, thereby making a significant contribution to national economic development and food security.
