14.64 lakh serving in government jobs, 5.22 lakh posts vacant: State Minister

SANGSAD BHABAN, July 7, 2026 (BSS) – A total of 14.64 lakh officials and employees are currently serving in government jobs across the country, while 5.22 lakh posts remain vacant in different ministries, divisions and government offices, State Minister for Public Administration Md. Abdul Bari told parliament today.

Replying to a question from treasury bench member Md. Selimuzzaman Mollah (Gopalganj-1) in the Jatiya Sangsad, the state minister said the information was based on the latest manpower data on government employees as of June 30, 2025.

He said 5.22 lakh posts are currently vacant in various ministries, divisions and departments of the government.

The state minister also informed the House that there are 3,798 approved posts under the Ministry of Public Administration, including 69 posts of Senior Secretary/Secretary, 368 posts of Additional Secretary, 1,116 posts of Joint Secretary and 2,245 posts of Deputy Secretary.

Against these approved positions, he said, 67 officials are serving as Senior Secretary/Secretary, 378 as Additional Secretary, 893 as Joint Secretary and 1,645 as Deputy Secretary, bringing the total number of serving officials in these four categories to 2,940.

He said there is no provision under the existing laws and regulations to recruit personnel beyond the approved number of posts.
