SANGSAD BHABAN, June 28, 2026 (BSS) - Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood today informed Parliament that load shedding is being taken place in Dhaka and other parts of the country as power generation from the national grid has dropped by nearly 3,000 megawatts due to technical faults at power plants and disruptions in coal unloading caused by rough weather in the Bay of Bengal.

Making a statement under Rule 300 of the Rules of Procedure in the Jatiya Sangsad, the minister said a power plant had to undergo a forced shutdown after a leak developed in one of its boiler tubes.

He said that rough sea conditions in the Bay of Bengal had also prevented coal unloading at a coal-fired power plant, forcing one of its generating units to remain shut.

“As a result of these two factors, around 3,000 megawatts of electricity generation has been lost from the national grid,” he said, adding that load shedding has become unavoidable in different parts of the country, including Dhaka.

The minister said he had discussed the situation with the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman.

Describing the situation as a national challenge, he urged all members of Parliament and the people to remain patient and work together to overcome the crisis.

Expressing optimism, the minister said the situation is expected to improve within the next two days, and load shedding will be reduced once power generation returns to normal.
