SANGSAD BHABAN, June 28, 2026 (BSS) – Whip of Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Apu today said the government has formulated a bold, realistic and people-oriented budget of Tk 9.38 lakh crore for the 2026–27 fiscal year within just four months of assuming office, aiming to ensure the welfare and development of the country’s 180 million people.

He made the remarks while taking part in the general discussion on the proposed national budget for FY2026–27 in Parliament.

The Whip said the present government, formed through a democratic process after a prolonged period of misrule, is working to fulfil the aspirations of the people. He observed that the presence of an effective opposition in Parliament would further strengthen democracy and help correct the government’s shortcomings.

Responding to questions over the implementation of such a large budget within a short period, Apu expressed confidence that the government’s sincerity, administrative efficiency and public support would ensure its successful execution.

Thanking the Finance Minister and the Prime Minister, he said the budget had been formulated with the objective of rebuilding the economy and improving the quality of life of the people. He added that the government is implementing plans to transform the country’s human resources into a skilled workforce to further strengthen the economy.

Highlighting the importance of social safety net programmes, the Whip said the initiative to introduce a family-based assistance programme, known as the Family Card, has generated widespread hope among the people, as it will directly benefit poor and underprivileged families.

He also praised the government’s initiatives in the education sector, saying the plan to distribute free school bags, shoes and uniforms among students in remote areas would play a significant role in encouraging children from low-income families to attend school.

Apu said the primary objective of a democratic government should be to improve the living standards of ordinary people and support disadvantaged sections of society, adding that the proposed budget reflects those priorities.

He urged the government to construct a new railway line from the Padma Bridge to Kuakata via Shariatpur and Hizla to improve communication in the region.

The project, he said, would reduce travel time from Dhaka to Kuakata to about two hours and provide a major boost to economic activities and tourism in the country’s southern region.
