SANGSAD BHABAN, June 22, 2026 (BSS) – Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood today told Parliament that the government has undertaken a series of initiatives to further improve, ensure and make uninterrupted electricity services available across the country.
Responding to a written tabled question from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Md Moktar Ali (Jashore-6), the minister said the government remains committed to providing reliable and quality power services to consumers nationwide.
“The present government is firmly committed to making electricity services across the country more advanced, uninterrupted and reliable,” he said.
The minister informed the House that the development of the power sector has been given due importance in the government’s election manifesto.
“To ensure improved and uninterrupted electricity supply, the government has formulated a 180-day action plan and is implementing it with utmost priority,” he said.
He said a separate action plan has also been adopted to expand electricity generation from renewable energy sources.
Highlighting the government’s initiatives, Iqbal Hassan Mahmood said Bangladesh has set a target of meeting 20 percent of its total electricity demand from renewable sources by 2030 and 30 percent by 2040 under the Renewable Energy Policy.
“We have already set a target of achieving 10,000 megawatts of solar power generation capacity,” he said.
The minister said initiatives have been taken under the National Rooftop Solar Programme to install rooftop solar systems on government offices, educational institutions and healthcare facilities.
He also informed the Parliament that the government has issued the “Guidelines for Development of Renewable Energy Projects on Land Owned by Government Agencies under the PPP Model, 2026” and the “Policy for Increasing Private Sector Participation in Renewable Energy-Based Power Generation, 2025.”
The minister said the government is simultaneously modernising the country’s power transmission and distribution systems alongside generation expansion.
“Measures have been taken to install prepaid meters to prevent wastage and illegal use of electricity,” he said.
He added that old distribution lines and substations are being regularly maintained, while new distribution lines and substations are being constructed across the country.
The minister further said that initiatives have also been undertaken to reduce system loss in electricity distribution.
